Black tattoo ink consists of a pigment and a carrier such as witch hazel,
alcohol, purified water. A good carrier allows the pigment to flow evenly
and it serves as an antibiotic. Typical pigment for black ink is from
the element Carbon and from Iron Oxide (FeO or Fe3O4). The easiest way to make black tattoo ink is to burn a piece of paper and mix the remaining ash with say vodka. Note: do NOT do this at home. Prison tattoos are made in a similar fashion, or with just black pen ink, soot from burned styrofoam or whatever weird stuff they got around. Dumb people are in prison; ergo, if you make your own ink you should be in prison. (uhh? Black ink is easier to remove via laser than colored inks such as yellow and green. It is difficult to cover up a black tattoo with another color; so laser removal is the best option available.
